How to Pack Your Computer Prior to Moving

Moving places without causing damage to delicate electronic equipment such as your computer is essential. However, if you wish to do your packing, by all means take the time and effort to pack computer equipment properly as accidental knocks and bumps are not out of the question.

• First and foremost, back up your hard drives. Data loss is one of the biggest frustrations in the modern world, and since most people keep important documents, files and all of their games on the computer it would make sense do back up the data. These days, one can back up the contents of their computer on virtual drives directly on the internet which is great convenience.
• Turn the computer off. As silly as this sounds, amidst all the commotion around the removal, many people don’t realise the computer is hibernated not turned off and unplug the thing directly from the socket. This doesn’t necessarily cause data loss, but the chance of it happening is notable so be careful and check before pulling the plug.
• Unplug all power and connector cords, be careful to remember which goes where – especially if you aren’t too good with peripheral devices, connections etc. If necessary colour code or label the wiring – it won’t take too long, but will make a tremendous difference when you set up and connect the computer after delivery. Tie or bind the computer chords neatly and pack them separately from any other appliance and device cabling.
• In all cases, it is best to transport your computer in its original packaging, if you still keep it that is. If you do keep the box, chances you also kept the foam insulation that wraps around the machine – by all means use that too. Factory made removal protection is the best thing you can do for your computer. In case you don’t have the foam covers, use any means available – anything from old newspapers to disused fabrics will suffice – use your ingenuity.
• If using normal removal boxes for transporting the computer i.e. the original packaging is not available, it is best to put the monitor in a separate box and then secure it accordingly. Do the same for the actual computer (if standalone). Periphery can be packed in a different box –remember peripheral devices also need proper insulation and protection.
• It is essential to use the correct size box – you don’t want the computer or the screen to wobble around or bang against the sides of the box during handling and transit.
• When wrapping the computer parts prior to putting them inside the boxes, use antistatic bubble wrap, it might cost a little extra than its regular counterpart but it is worth it. Try and do the wrapping as best as you can, ideally the computer should fit snuggly inside the box if you did a good job.
