High Grossing Movies That Have Been Filmed in the United Kingdom
Throughout the years numerous high grossing films have been shot in the United Kingdom. And while some movies are pretty obviously filmed in Great Britain, other will certainly shock you. Here are some of the best cinematic productions to have been shot on Her Majesty’s land.
The first movie from our list date back to 1995 and starred Mel Gibson in the role of William Wallace, Sophie Marceau in the role of Princess Isabella of France and Patrick McGoohan in the role of King Edward “Longshanks”. If you haven’t already guesses the title of the movie, it is Braveheart. Much of the film was shot at the foot of Britain’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands.
The next movie will come as a shocker to you because it is The Hunt for the Red October. You may be wondering how a film about a Russian submarine that defects to the US is connected to the United Kingdom? Well the answer will certainly surprise you. The English city of Liverpool was used as the set for the scenes that were allegedly taking place in the capital of the USSR, Moscow.
The first film of the Batman franchise starred Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicolson as The Joker and Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale. The movie was the first superhero movie since Superman to achieve worldwide fame and is presently regarded as one of the best film in cinematic history. And while Gotham City is a fictional city, the town of Milton Keynes is certainly not and was used to depict Batman’s city.
Lots of Gladiator fans wrongly believe that he opening scene of the movie that made Russell Crowe a world famous movie star was indeed shot in the forest of South Germany. The truth is that the scene was filmed in Farnham Wood in British county of Surrey.
In 2003, Angelina Jolie reprised her role of Lara Croft. Tomb Raider featured several scenes which were supposedly taking place in China. The shocking truth however is that the Welsh village of Beddgelert of the location where all the China scenes were shot.
This is second movie on our list which is based on a Tom Clancy novel (The Hunt for the Red October was the first). In 1992, Harrison Ford played the role of Jack Ryan in the movie Patriot Games. The makers of the movie used the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London to depict the White House. Recently the Royal Naval College has featured in another high grossing movie, Thor: The Dark World which starred Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
